Lash Extension Aftercare: What Actually Makes Them Last

If you’ve ever wondered why some lash sets look amazing for weeks while others “shed fast,” here’s the truth: retention isn’t luck. It’s aftercare + habits + a few simple rules that protect the bond.
I’m Teja Bella, licensed since 2013 and based near Lake Oconee / Eatonton, GA, and this is the real-life aftercare I teach my clients to keep lashes looking full, fluffy, and fresh.
The first 24–48 hours
This is the “set the foundation” window.
Do:
Keep lashes dry for the first 24 hours (unless I told you otherwise).
Sleep on your back if you can (at least night one).
Avoid:
Steam (hot showers/sauna), crying sessions (I know, life happens 😭), heavy sweating
Touching, rubbing, or picking
Clean lashes = longer retention (yes, clean!)
Clean your lashes 3–5x/week (daily if you wear makeup or have oily skin).
Use a lash cleanser (or a gentle, lash-safe foam).
Rinse well.
Pat dry.
Brush through with a clean spoolie.
Why it matters: oils + makeup + dirt break down the bond and cause premature shedding.
The “oil is the enemy” rule
Oil-based products don’t mix with lash extensions.
Avoid getting these on/near your lash line:
Oil cleansers
Heavy eye creams
Coconut oil / castor oil near lashes
Makeup removers that feel “slippery”
If you love skincare (same), just keep oils below the orbital bone and away from your lash base.
Mascara + eyeliner tips (so you don’t sabotage yourself)
If you want mascara, use lash extension-safe mascara only (and mostly on the tips).
Skip waterproof mascara. It’s clingy and removal is rough.
Use gel or powder liner, not creamy/oily pencil right at the base.
Sleep + friction (the sneaky lash killer)
If you sleep face-down or crush one side into the pillow, expect that side to shed faster.
Solutions:
Satin/silk pillowcase
Lash sleep mask (the “3D” domed ones)
Book fills based on your lifestyle (some sleepers need fills sooner and that’s normal)
Don’t panic over shedding
You naturally shed 2–5 lashes per eye per day. If an extension is attached to a natural lash, it sheds with it — that’s healthy.
What’s NOT normal:
lots of lashes falling out in clumps
itchy/red lash line
If that happens, text me. Don’t self-diagnose with TikTok University 😅
How often should you get fills?
Most clients do best on:
2 weeks: if you want always-full lashes
3 weeks: maintenance sweet spot
4 weeks: usually needs a full set again (depends on what’s left)
Quick aftercare checklist (save this)
✅ Keep lashes dry first 24 hours
✅ Clean lashes 3–5x/week
✅ No oils near lash line
✅ Be gentle—no rubbing/picking
✅ Brush daily with a clean spoolie
✅ Book fills every 2–3 weeks
Want lashes that stay pretty longer?
